The large Christmas Market in Halle is located right in the city center. It takes place every year at the market square and extends down to Hallmarkt. Therefore, getting there is quite easy for both locals and visitors from outside the city. Due to the challenging parking situation in the city center, we recommend using public transportation. Before you travel, it’s also worth checking the current opening hours. For a brief preview of what you can experience at the Christmas market, take a look at this video:
Tram: All tram lines pass through the market square, the central transfer point. This provides perfect conditions for your journey to the Halle (Saale) Christmas Market. Suitable lines include 10, 1, 3, 8, 16, 7, and 5. The stop is wheelchair accessible, making it convenient for wheelchair users as well.
By Train: If you’re travelling from outside the city by train, you will likely arrive at Halle’s main station. From there, it’s a pleasant walk along Leipziger Straße (locally known as the “Boulevard”) to the Halle Christmas Market. Alternatively, you can take tram lines 5 or 7. It’s just two stops, so a short-distance ticket will suffice. Tram tickets can be purchased from machines on the tram, from the driver, or via the tram app.
By Car: If you’re planning to drive to the Halle Christmas Market, it’s advisable to park outside the city center. Parking spaces in the downtown area are typically scarce during peak times. A practical alternative to city center parking garages are the Park + Ride facilities. Here, you can conveniently switch to public transport and head to the Halle Christmas Market. Halle Christmas Market: Experience the most beautiful market in Saxony-Anhalt
In recent years, a lot has changed in the organization of the Christmas market. However, there are also some things that have remained the same in Halle for many years and have become real visitor magnets. For example, the 15-meter-high Christmas tree in front of the town hall. It is the heart of the market and can be seen from afar. When the sun sets and the tree lights up in the darkness, the Christmas magic feels almost tangible. Anyone who has stood in front of it, feeling the cold in their legs and holding a cup of hot mulled wine, will remember the experience for a long time.
Almost right next to it, a large wooden candle pyramid is erected each year. It looks like a gigantic version of the typical Ore Mountain Christmas pyramids. The Halle Christmas market often also features its own ice rink, though whether and when it will return this year remains uncertain.
Just in time for the Advent season, the Red Tower — one of Halle’s landmarks — will be decorated again. Thanks to special lighting, it will glow red in the evening hours, resembling a giant Christmas candle. Right next to it are the Hausmann towers, part of the Marienkirche at the market square. These towers are decorated with countless strings of lights especially for the Christmas market. At the official opening of the market, these lights are traditionally switched on. The towers can also be visited, offering a wonderful view over the entire market from the top.
Family-friendliness is a top priority at the Halle Christmas Market
Every year, the city of Halle puts a lot of effort into planning and organizing the Christmas market, with a special focus on family-friendliness. For example, there are many activities for children: in recent years, these have included various stage performances by local artists, a dedicated bakery, and a fairy tale forest with different characters. Additionally, the Halle Christmas Market features a meeting with Santa Claus and a walk-in nativity scene, where readings and other small events are held. Popular activities include costume photo shoots and romantic carriage rides through the snow.
The Halloren, a local tradition, are also always present at the market, offering a “Schausieden” demonstration where visitors can see how salt was made centuries ago.
